An Act Relative to the Massachusetts Lead Law and Promoting Equal Access to Lead-Free Housing
Senate Sponsor: State Senator Jamie Eldridge House Sponsor: Representative David LeBoeuf & State Representative Vanna Howard
In 1971, the state legislature intended to prevent lead poisoning through preventive deleading. After 50 years, it is clear the law has failed. In 2019 DPH reported that 1.8 million housing units had not been inspected or deleaded. Over 3,500 children met the CDC threshold for lead poisoning in 2017. Each one now faces a future of diminished potential because of irreversible neurological damage, cognitive impairment, and behavioral problems. Because lead poisoning is preventable, this is a tragedy for each child.
