Senator Eldridge and Representative Kate Hogan Announce $426,050 Grant for Small Farm, Inc
The award will be used to build a washing, packaging, and storage facility to increase production in the winter
Maynard/Stow, MA — State Senator Jamie Eldridge (D-Marlborough) and State Representative Kate Hogan (D-Stow) announced that Small Farm, Inc will be awarded $426,050 through the Food Security Infrastructure Grant Program. The grant will be used for the construction of a washing, packaging, and storage facility that will increase production during the winter months.
The Food Security Infrastructure Grant Program aims to ensure that families throughout the Commonwealth have access to food, especially fresh and local produce. The program at the same time seeks to ensure that farmers, fisherman, and other local food producers are connected to the food system.
Small Farm produces mixed vegetables, berries, and flowers in Stow, Massachusetts. Small Farm aims to increase the availability of fresh produce for locals to create excitement around healthy food. Produce is available through three seasons of Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, annually, as well as through local farmers markets and wholesale channels. Participants in the CSA program buy a share of the produce up front and then receive their portion weekly during the season, and Small Farm offers the ability to pay for CSA with SNAP benefits.
“It’s important to support local farmers as well as their programs to get fresh produce to families who might otherwise not have access to it,” said Senator Eldridge. “I’m thankful to the EEA for approving this grant, which will support Small Farm’s production capacity.”
“Small Farm has been an important part of the Stow community for many years -- our families and neighbors appreciate its farm stand, pick-your-own and CSA programs and locally-produced food,” said Representative Hogan. “We are thrilled that these grant funds will help increase Small Farm's capabilities and reach."
